The Safety Specialist assists in the management of Chugach�s Loss Control, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Safety Training programs in compliance with regulatory requirements. It also conducts electrical safety demonstrations for schools, community and emergency response organizations, and for the general public.

In order to be considered, we're looking for the following experience:
  • At least seven (7) years experience as a Safety Specialist or Safety Engineer. Two of those years must have been working in a field environment.
  • Two year AA degree in Occupational Health and Safety or completion of an accredited safety program, or an engineering or science degree.
  • Ability to make presentations in front of large and small groups.


  • Duties:Duties and Responsibilities
  • Acts as a consultant to supervisors and employees, providing information on how to conduct their work using the best safety practices.
  • Visits field crews and power plants on a routine basis, notifying supervisors of necessary improvements to safety practices and assisting the crews and supervisors with correcting unsafe practices and procedures.
  • Assists with developing and implementing Chugach safety, health and training programs.
  • Assists with establishing policy and procedures to maintain compliance with Federal and State safety and health regulations.
  • Develops checklists, conducts observations, and tracks the safety and health issues identified during facility observations.
  • Conducts hazard analyses and risk assessments and develops mitigation and implementation plans.
  • Researches, develops, conducts and audits compliance oriented training classes for Chugach.
  • Reviews contractor health and safety plans.
  • Develops and plans supplemental training activities as requested.
  • Monitors changes to State and Federal safety and health regulations and keeps department managers informed of requirements.
  • Audits department�s Safety and Health records to ensure compliance with State and Federal safety and health regulations and statutes.
  • Conducts electrical safety demonstrations and classes in schools, community organizations, and other companies. Conducts demonstrations for Emergency Responders and informs them of safe practices and Chugach procedures.
  • Assists supervisors in preparing materials for safety meetings.
  • Conducts accident/incident investigations and writes incident reports.
  • Assists in developing and monitoring Chugach�s Safety Incentive Program.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications:Education:
    Associates degree in Occupational Heath and Safety, an accredited safety program, or engineering or science degree required.

    Education Substitution:
    An additional two years of experience as a safety specialist or safety engineer may be substituted for the degree requirement.

    Experience:
    Seven years experience as a safety specialist or safety engineer required, two of which must be in a field environment. Preference will be given to a candidate who has achieved an OHST, ASP, CIH or CSP certification.

    Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must possess a comprehensive working knowledge of Federal and State OSHA regulations. Must be familiar with DOT regulations.
  • Must have previous experience in conducting training classes which includes program design, research, and implementation.
  • Must be familiar with NESC, NEC, ANSI, ASTM, NFPA and other safety consensus standards.
  • Must be able to conduct hazard assessments and develop mitigation plans.
  • Must have good communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be able to interface with represented employees as well as management staff, regulatory agencies, contractors and the general public.
  • Must have knowledge and proficiency in the use of a personal computer.
  • Must possess working knowledge of word processing and database management systems.
  • Must have the ability to communicate and provide safety and health information to community organizations, schools and the public to promote safety practices.
  • Must be able to use air sampling equipment and interpret the results.


  • Training, Licensure, Certifications:
    Certified OSHA instructor for 10 and 30-hour classes preferred. Must possess a valid Alaska driver�s license. Must have a current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, or obtain within 3 months.

    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to: lift 25 pounds from ground level to an elevation of three feet; climb stairways and fixed/portable ladders; wear a respirator and other required personal protective equipment.

    Ability to: sit for prolonged periods (frequently); stand for prolonged periods (frequently); walk on all surfaces and over all terrain (frequently); stoop (occasionally); crawl (rarely).

    Working Conditions:
    Work is performed in both office environment and field conditions, where exposure to cold and wet weather and rough terrain can be expected. Exposure to hazardous noise environments and chemicals is possible. Frequent travel to various work sites and remote locations by light aircraft and helicopter is required.
